From a 5% Chance of Survival to His First Day of School

As parents everywhere prepare their children for the back-to-school season, the first day of school may seem like an ordinary milestone—one most families take for granted. But for 4-year-old Nolan, it’s nothing short of a miracle his parents once feared they would never witness.

At just one year old, Nolan’s world was turned upside down with a devastating diagnosis: juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML), a rare and aggressive childhood cancer. What followed were two grueling years of hospital stays, endless procedures, and unimaginable uncertainty. His tiny body endured more than most adults face in a lifetime. He survived two bone marrow transplants—the second with only a 5% chance of survival—while his family held on tightly to hope, praying for just one more tomorrow.

“Nolan hasn’t had a typical start to childhood because of his treatment,” shared Starlight mom, Courtney. “Much of his early learning and social experiences happened in hospital rooms rather than in a daycare or social setting.”

Instead of playgrounds and laughter, Nolan’s earliest memories were IV poles and sterile walls. His family longed for the everyday joys most parents dream about.

In those darkest moments, Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada was there—something Nolan’s family could count on when everything else felt uncertain. With the support of partners like Toys“R”Us Canada, they were given back pieces of childhood that once felt out of reach.

At a holiday shopping spree, Nolan’s face lit up as he raced down the aisles of Toys“R”Us Canada, choosing toys with the same excitement as any other child. At Ripley’s Aquarium, he pressed his hands to the glass, mesmerized by the swirl of colourful fish. And on a warm summer afternoon, his family finally felt the freedom of a pontoon cruise, laughing together far away from hospital walls.

While others might see these as small joys, for Nolan’s family, they were extraordinary—moments that held them together, that whispered hope when hope felt impossible.

Against all odds, this past June, Nolan celebrated one year in remission. What once seemed impossible is now reality: this September, Nolan will put on his backpack and step into a classroom for the very first time. The year ahead is filled with dreams once out of reach—the chance to make friends, to learn, and simply to be a kid. With his parents, big brother Bradley, and big sister Callie proudly cheering him on, Nolan is ready to begin this long-awaited new chapter.

Nolan’s biggest back-to-school wish? To make new friends and spend his days in a classroom instead of a hospital. For his family, that simple wish is the greatest gift of all.

“Starting school is a huge milestone for him—and for us. We can’t wait to hear all about the new memories he makes and see him living the life he’s always deserved outside hospital walls,” said Courtney.
